La tercera de las cuatro varnas (castas) de India.

Tradicionalmente descritos como plebeyos, los vaishyas están relacionados con el trabajo productivo como el comercio, la agricultura y el pastoreo. Según la leyenda surgieron de los muslos de Prajapati, después de los brahmanes y los chatrias, pero antes de los sudras. Como las dos clases más altas, son "dos veces nacidos (ver upanayana). Se les atribuye históricamente haber favorecido el surgimiento de los credos religiosos reformistas del budismo y el jainismo. En la actualidad, se han convertido en un símbolo de prestigio de la clase media, y muchos de ellos logran integrarse a las clases más altas.
